 Our Roots: A Legacy of Service and Faith
Porter’s Electric Motor Service, Inc. was founded by Heyward Porter, a man whose life was defined by courage, commitment, and community. In 1942, Heyward enlisted in the Army Air Force and bravely flew 28 missions as a turret gunner during World War II. After the war, he returned to his hometown of Blacksburg, South Carolina, and married his high school sweetheart, Lois Cobb.
Fueled by the opportunities of the GI Bill, Heyward pursued training in electric motor repair and, in 1948, opened Porter’s Electric Motor Service. Under his leadership as President, the company grew steadily, earning a reputation for high-quality service and competitive pricing. Today, the business operates out of a 40,000-square-foot facility, a testament to Heyward’s vision and values.
In 2017, Heyward’s son, Philip Porter, assumed the role of President. A devoted follower of Christ, Philip—alongside his wife Cheryle—guided the company and its employees through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with compassion and resilience. Outside of work, Philip was an accomplished pilot who volunteered with Angel Flight and the Freedom Aviation Network, using his skills to serve those in need. Tragically, in June 2025, Philip and Cheryle lost their lives in a plane crash. Their legacy of faith and service continues to inspire the company.
Following this loss, leadership passed to Chris Raines, Heyward’s grandson. Chris began his career at Porter’s in 1981, and after earning an Electrical Engineering degree in 1991 he became the Shop Manager. Known for his unwavering dedication to customer satisfaction, Chris now leads the company as President with the same integrity and commitment that have defined the Porter name for generations.
Also serving in leadership is Carmen Porter, Heyward’s granddaughter and Vice President of the company. Carmen brings a deep understanding of business and customer service, along with the unmistakable “Porter Business Instinct.” Her experience and passion continue to drive the company forward.

As the industry leader in repairing, rewinding and rebuilding new and old electric motors, we are proud to be UL® Listed for AC and DC, synchronous, low-voltage, medium-voltage and high-voltage motor repairs with nationally recognized quality control systems.
